Toby (35+ years old).
Toby believes that comedy has a transcendent power, and this eventually destroys him. He is an intelligent man, but not intelligent enough. He is the protagonist of the play. He is a chip-shop King Lear.
Keith (30+ years old).
Keith is the Faustian architect of Toby’s rise and fall. He is concerned with fame and power but not for any reason we can immediately identify. He is a manipulator. He is the play's Chaotic evil.
Linda (30+ years old)
Linda is the moral constant in the play. She is assertive and combative when faced with evil, but she is also fallible. She wants to love Toby, but the welfare of her sons trump his ego. She is the audience personified.
David (17+ years old)
David has outgrown his father’s failings and refuses to become him. He is intelligent but helpless. He has grown up too soon.
Nigel (14+ years old)
Nigel has not outgrown his father’s failings, rather those failings make up much of who he is. Nigel has the same sense of justice that Toby has. Nigel cannot see what David see’s. Nigel is doomed.
